Haenyeo

26.04. - 27.05.2023

Kunstarkaden, Munich

The various sized drawings in this exhibition are originally inspired by sea women (Ama/ Haenyeo), a group of female workers, mainly from the coastal region of Japan and Korea, who free-dive to fish for marine life such as shellfish.

Like many female workers around the world, they not only carry the burden of providing for their families, but also raising their offsprings under difficult working conditions.

Among them, there are many strong-willed and sturdy women, but there are also those who are still young and childish, and whose bodies are suffering from years of occupational diseases. The world of the sea is the world of women, who move across the cold waters of the ocean and the warm communities built by themselves on the shore.

Diving into the shimmering darkness of the sea floor, hands reaching towards the faint glimmer of gold in the misty haze, hands of labor, weathered and undaunted by the gifts of nature.

The brightness of daylight to dizzying eyes, the pain of tossing and turning in the darkness of night, and the prick of the fruit, the pain of the body, all come together to form a part of life.
